Great teachers change lives. At the School of Teaching, Learning and Curriculum Studies (TLC), that conviction drives everything we do — from the way we design our courses to the way our faculty show up for students every single day.
TLC is home to a vibrant community of undergraduate and graduate students, dedicated faculty, and professional staff united by a common purpose: advancing education in ways that are meaningful, equitable, and forward-thinking. Our students come from across Ohio and beyond, drawn by the quality of our programs, the depth of our faculty expertise, and a learning environment where they are known, supported, and challenged to grow. Whether they are earning their first teaching license or completing a doctorate, TLC students graduate prepared not just for the job, but for the full complexity of a life in education.
Our faculty are among the most accomplished in their fields. They bring to the classroom active research agendas, deep connections to P-12 and higher education communities, and a genuine investment in student success. From nationally recognized scholars in educational technology and literacy to experienced practitioners in career-technical and early childhood education, TLC faculty mentor the next generation of educators with both intellectual rigor and personal care. Our staff work alongside them to ensure that every student, from first-semester undergraduates to doctoral candidates, has the resources, advising, and support they need to thrive.
TLC's programs span the full arc of an educational career, from initial teacher licensure and undergraduate education degrees to master's, specialist, and doctoral programs that prepare educators for leadership in schools, higher education, and beyond. We are proud of the breadth and depth of what we offer, and proud of the educators we send into classrooms and communities across the region and the country.
Growing Stronger: TLC and Transformation 2028
Beginning in Fall 2026, TLC is expanding as part of Kent State's Transformation 2028 (T28) initiative — a university-wide effort to align academic programs for long-term strength, sustainability, and impact. As part of this strategic realignment, programs from the former School of Foundations, Leadership and Administration (FLA) are joining TLC, bringing additional expertise in educational leadership, higher education administration, cultural foundations, and research. This growth reflects the university's commitment to building a more connected, collaborative, and innovative home for education at Kent State. The integrity and excellence of all programs remains unchanged. Our expanded school will be better positioned than ever to prepare educators and leaders for the challenges and opportunities ahead.
TLC is a school on the move. Our faculty, staff, and students bring remarkable energy and dedication to the work of education, and as we grow through Transformation 2028, that energy only increases. We welcome our new colleagues and their programs with enthusiasm, and we look forward to the new collaborations and possibilities this expanded community will create. Whatever brings you to TLC — a passion for teaching, a desire to lead, a commitment to advancing your field — you have found the right place. We are glad you are here. — Dr. Scott Courtney, Associate Professor and Director, School of Teaching, Learning and Curriculum Studies
